Foundation of English in Japan:

You may think you are learning American English. You are actually learning British English in books from America, taught by teachers from around the world. These books use American vocabulary but  the foundation and pronunciation of English in Japan was created in conjunction with the  British hundreds of years ago.  Japanese romaji sounds were all matched to the British vowel sound system. Why? Because America as we know it did not exist at that time. Teaching only one thing thing in English is like learning only half of the alphabet. English is like a watch. Everything is focused on the center hub and everything is connected to itself. Struggling with English is not your fault. We don't want you to leave.

You are not being fully trained for some reason. How can Japan rank near the top in every industry such as math, science, engineering, art, design, and construction, but near the bottom in English for over 60 years? Is it possible to out spend most countries in English education, yet rank near the bottom 20% of global proficiency testing? Actually, the very small percentage of Japanese children that attend international school in Japan graduate with perfect English and attend top universities around the world.  That means the answer to perfect English is already in Japan. Impact of Romaji on English Learning:

If you are educated in Japan, your ability to hear English sounds begins to deteriorate over time starting at age 8 until nearly vanishing as an adult. This is a result of substituting romaji sounds for your natural hearing ability via your ears. It modifies the original sound. Japanese is the only major language that has created a completely separate and unique sound system for all things not originating in Japan. It's called romaji. This sound system is based on the Japanese language that recreates a new version of the original. It's often not recognizable to anyone that does not understand the Japanese language. This is a safety net and great for everyone in Japan. It guarantees that everyone in Japan can understand the same sounds. Reading English is bad for your pronunciation.

If you are reading English and trying to improve your American pronunciation, you are causing more harm than good.  Reading English allows the familiar romaji sounds to dominate in your pronunciation. Would you rather drive a car  4 wheels or a a car with only one wheel. Reaching your potential in English will be impossible when you only learn one of the four phases of language development. English education in Japan focuses on the fourth and final phase of English development. This is the phase all adults are currently in around the world.
