Title: "The Legend of the Christmas Tree"
Passage:
The Christmas tree is a symbol of the holiday season that is celebrated by many people around the world. But where did this tradition come from?
According to legend, the Christmas tree has its roots in ancient Europe. People in these countries believed that evergreen trees, which stayed green even in the cold winter months, were special and held a connection to the natural world. They would decorate their homes with evergreen branches to bring good luck and to celebrate the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.
The modern Christmas tree tradition began in Germany in the 16th century. Germans would bring a tree into their home and decorate it with candles, cookies, and small gifts. When Prince Albert, who was from Germany, married Queen Victoria of England in the 1800s, he brought the tradition of the Christmas tree with him. The royal couple was depicted in a newspaper standing next to a Christmas tree, and the tradition quickly spread throughout England and the rest of the world.
Today, people all over the world celebrate the holiday season by setting up a Christmas tree in their home and decorating it with lights, ornaments, and other decorations.
Follow-up Questions:
1. What do people in ancient Europe believe about evergreen trees?
2. Where did the modern Christmas tree tradition begin?
3. How did the tradition of the Christmas tree spread throughout the world?
4. What do people do with a Christmas tree today?
